  • Share:
Name: Skijor with You Dog & Beginning Skate
Date: January 7, 2022
Time: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM CST
Event Description:
Experience the grace and elegance of skijoring through the winter woods with your dog with these two classes that will teach all the basics you’ll need to know to get started in this exciting sport. Skijoring is really a partnership between you and your dog, with the dog learning how to pull you through the woods and you assisting that effort with proper skiing technique.

We’ll start the afternoon learning the elements of skate skiing, which is the preferred method for skijor. The goal will be to accomplish a smooth and efficient glide, pushing off with one ski and then the other and how and when to use your ski poles to create the graceful rhythm that defines skate skiing. We’ll also cover proper body position and balancing tips to further refine
your skills.

For the second class we’ll bring in the dogs! You’ll learn about the types of gear and equipment needed, how to size equipment properly for both you and your dog, how to train your dog to skijor, what commands to teach the dog, trail technique and etiquette, and where the dogfriendly trails are in the area. Note that this is a demonstration class. Depending on conditions,
there may be an opportunity for you and your dog to try skijoring after the class.

The two classes will be taught by some of the best in the business. Dan Clausen will teach the skate skiing class. It’s a true passion of his as is evidenced by his decades of teaching experience and the 16 years he spent on the elite-level Professional Ski Instructors of America Demo Team.

Niina Baum will teach us how to incorporate our dogs into the sport. She’s co-captain of the U.S. National Dryland Dog Sled Team, having competed in the 2019 Dryland Dog Sledding World Championships in Nybro, Sweden.

Participants are invited to sign up for just one or both classes. Register for both classes at the discounted rate of $50.
