Understand Life on the Lac du Flambeau Native American Reservation - 

Dillman’s Creative Arts Foundation (DCAF), Lac du Flambeau, Wisc. is offering a 4 day workshop June 20-23, 2021 which will help you understand life on the Lac du Flambeau Native American Reservation now, in the past and in the future.

Local Art leagues, plus leagues throughout the country, have been given an honorarium for a member to attend this workshop which is entitled Woodland Native American Arts and Culture , however, participants who would like to understand life on the Native American Reservation in Lac du Flambeau,Wisc. are welcome as well. You do not have to be an artist to enjoy the workshop or portions of the full session.

During this group of presentations and art classes you may make traditional Chippewa art from Chippewa’s living currently in Lac du Flambeau, while also learning about the history and policies for their continued way of life from very knowledgeable experts in their field. This workshop is of interest to all living on the reservation and neighboring communities as well. 

The 11 instructors begin their programs on June 20 at 5:00 and continue their presentations until 5:00 June 23, under tent provided by DCAF sponsor Sam’s Rental.

The following tells you some of the activities included in this limited number of attendee event promoted by WXPR, a DCAF sponsor. --  Roseland Poupart will prepare two types of Native American Fry Bread as part of the socially distanced welcome reception. Mary Burns will display one of her 12 Ancestral Women jacquard weavings depicting Native American elder women who “were the glue to preserve the culture”. This exhibit includes Tinker Schuman of Lac du Flambeau. Following the reception Tinker will share her Native
American dance regalia after discussing “Healing through Poetry and Stories”. 

Monday morning Gregg Guthrie will share his life: “Two Cultures: Moccasins on one foot and Shoe on the other”. Following there will be the showing of two films “The Enduring Ways of the Lac du Flambeau People and Treaty Rights.”   While storytelling, Phyllis Wyse’s will help you make your own beadwork earrings. Duane Poupart discusses birch bark harvesting and fishing decoy presentation. You may make a winter bark medallion. In the evening Jim Lee will lead you in a sing along while you roast marshmallows around an open fire. You may purchase Native American Women of Song CDS during this time. 

Tuesday Michele Reed, Manager of the Lac du Flambeau Indian Bowl, will show you Native American historical dance and help you make your Dream Catcher. A portion of the proceeds of this workshop will go to the advancement of plans for the of the Waaswaaganing Lac du Flambeau Living Arts and Culture Center’s Pow Wow grounds.  This will be followed by Wayne Valliere and his canoe exhibition and a discussion of Native games, such
as the traditional Lacrosse. Gregg Guthrie will lead the group, via your own car, on a tour of the reservation boundaries, to include the LdF museum, LdF Dormitory, and an optional dinner at the Lake of the Torches, another DCAF sponsor.

Wednesday Jim Bokern’s, well known historian teacher’s presentation: “Tracing Artistic Crossroads along White Sand Lake” will show where early natives had their gathering and sales spots, followed by a pontoon boat ride to see other locations of his historical program. Emerson Coy will share very
interesting details of the Planning Committee’s history of the Tribe and goals for the future. After the farewell reception visit, another DCAF sponsor, Sara Muender’s Boulder Junction Moondeer Gallery. Sara has 150 local artist’s work represented on her walls. Annual Honorariums are given to members of 22 Art Leagues. The local Lakeland Art League and the Manito Art League honorariums, as well as other leagues have not assigned all their awards to art students at this time.

Most years scholarship funds have been raised, in part, through Silent Auctions at winter promotional events in Chicago, Mpls and Florida communities, as well as generous donations from prior students. There are still additional scholarship funds available. To provide more options for family member’s pleasure, Dillman’s Creative Arts Foundation (DCAF), a non-profit organization, was formed in 1978 with the assist of a continuingly helpful Board of Directors. The 2021 Workshop Schedule offers over 40 courses in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, photography, writing and more in dillmans.com/2021. There are beginning through advanced students in 4 and 5 day programs. 

“In this, our 44 season, we will continue to introduce the traveling public to the outstanding restaurants, attractions and quaint shops of the Northwoods when they are not busy with their artwork.” says Dennis Robertson, Dillman’s Creative Arts Retreat Director.  Over 13,000 students plus their PALS (participants at Large) have traveled a great distance, often through Rhinelander airport to experience the seasons in the Northwoods. Students have flown in from Europe, Australia, Thailand and New Zealand. The courses may help prepare students for a profession in the visual arts, quite often non professionals enjoy a specific retreat outlet for artistic talent in a non-threatening yet concentrated setting. Wisconsin’s spring and fall offer Florida and Arizona’s southern artists a break from heat and humidity plus nature’s show of the changing seasons. 

Since its inception in 1978, DCAF has awarded tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships and honorariums to students of all ages to attend workshops.
